If you're not a coffee expert, it could be somewhat intimidating to see all the various beans and paraphernalia at Atomic - but don't be put off, because it turns out the food is actually as amazing as the coffee. While there's the standard breakfast fare like bircher muesli on offer, it's appropriately listed under the 'boring' menu (this blackboard literally has the word 'boring' above it). On another board, a short but ever-changing selection of other cooked dishes is also available, and definitely worth trying. The beef cheek hot pot I had upon one visit was absolutely delicious, and very generously portioned given the price, while the hash cakes are also a delight. Everything is presented beautifully as befits the industrial decor. There's a wide range of tempting cabinet options too, from donuts to slices. Oh, and the coffee's not too bad either. Highly recommended!
Atomic Coffee is a name that is synonymous with great coffee in New Zealand, and their headquarters and cafe in Kingsland is like the holy grail for caffeine heads. As well as serving up stellar brews and grinding and roasting beans on site, they offer coffee making classes of all kinds as well as some of the most knowledgable baristas I have ever been lucky enough to quiz. Ask at the counter when the next course is coming up, it is a great way to while away a few hours and renew your appreciation for a really great brew.
This bircher muesli was particularly light and creamy - with the tartness of the tamarillo cutting it just right. It's not the only must-try brunch option at the Atomic flagship in Kingsland; along with a good selection of other to-order meals you'll find a wide selection of fresh-baked muffins, brioches and the like. And mini versions of the bircher, perfect at $3 a pop. Trying the coffee is, of course, a must.
