I first stumbled upon Aunty Mena’s in the company of a vegetarian friend, and though I’m an omnivore, I still can’t go past this restaurant when I’m not in a meat-eating mood. It’s fair to say the sound of "mock chicken" will inspire trepidation in most meat-eaters but give it a chance: even compared to the real deal, it’s pretty good.
An extremely popular Malaysian restaurant on Cuba St., everything on the menu is vegan and accommodating choosy eaters is a cinch. Their abundance of meat substitutes (including bbq gluten and mock duck) are both yummy and endlessly entertaining, and will even keep the carnivores in your group satisfied. Try the mee goreng or laksa. With a good selection of dishes starting at $12.50, you’ll fill your belly and bring home leftovers for tomorrow’s lunch.
One of the few exclusively vegetarian eateries in Wellington, Aunty Mena's is certainly a favourite. You can get classic Malaysian dishes such as laksa and mee goreng, while the dumplings are also popular. Perhaps most interestingly and importantly though, Mena's features a range of vegetarian meats, which I doubt you'd find anywhere else, a delicious novelty.
