Bistro Lago delivers the goods when it comes to places that have mint views. I wouldn’t have thought so initially as it isn’t on the lakefront - but once you’re up there, WOWZERS! They also get my top star rating for the fact that their lake view is matched with an exquisite wine selection, including those rare bottles of vintage I would’t normally see on a supermarket shelf in the local Taupo Countdown.
Another favourite of mine is Simon Gault’s Bistro Lago at the Hilton. It’s the place locals go to for a special occasion to dine in style. The picturesque views of lake Taupo and the mountain ranges almost make you feel like you are somewhere beautifully, elegantly European, and the menu is European but made with yummy NZ fresh produce. I absolutely love their Sous Vide chicken breast, cooked to perfection with truffle mushroom mouse and chorizo butter bean stew. So much yum on a plate.
For those watching their waist lines this summer but don’t want to miss out on dining at one of Taupo’s top restaurants, opt for the Simon Gault Super Food Salad which comes dairy-free and gluten-free. Packed full of anti-oxidants and good protein, you’ll feel full enough to not feel like you are missing out on Bistro Lago’s euqally divine pork belly.

Complete with elegance, amazing views, and a superb menu designed by New Zealand Master Chef Simon Gault, this place will blow your socks off. Their poached Akaroa salmon is divine, and this November, you can indulge in a cray-fish inspired menu: 50 Shades of Cray.
While not a hard-out Italian Restaurant, the Italian food served at Simon Gault’s Hilton Taupo restaurant is to die for. Definitely the place to go for a special night out in Taupo. Try out their Bruschetta with roast peppers and provolone cheese if you’re after something with an Italian flavour, or their risotto of the day.
