Besides having the most delectable cabinet of sweet treats in Auckland, a wall full of freshly baked organic goods and the easiest parking in the neighbourhood, it's the position of sustainability that this cafe and bakery takes (and the super cute way they tell the story) that keeps me coming back.
Little Bread & Butter bakery in Ponsonby Central has been a favourite spot of mine since first opening its doors, so to say I was a bit excited to hear that they had opened a second location with a cafe inside would be an understatement. I finally popped down to check it out next to Farro off Richmond Road, and instantly gave it five stars for the ease of parking and spaciousness alone! The food was also top notch, with my pick so far being the smashed avocado on sourdough with a perfectly poached egg (above). A brand new fave is born.
There’s something contrived about Bread and Butter cafe, it's glossy store bought vintage feel and odd soundtrack puts me on edge. Although this is the case their bread and food is undeniable. I'm a sucker for pulled pork at the best of time so when it came to ordering on bleary hungover Sunday my decision was an absolute no brainer. The chunky chips that it was accompanied were delicious, the bread fresh, the sauces rich and the meat itself succulent (although perhaps it could do with a touch more flavouring). Other members of my table enjoyed the fresh juice, avacado smash and grilled vege salad. Go there to check out the food!
Despite being not being the most picturesque location (opposite a hardware store), the pies here are to die for - and the ham and cheese croissants are a dream too. The pastries, bread and pies are baked on site and the space is modern, sleek and spacious (much more so that her Ponsonby sister!). My partner, the pie lover's verdict, "This pie tastes like a beef stew in pastry and that's how it should be." Move over The Fridge, there's a new, delicious pie player in town.
