Castle Hill is located approximately one hours drive from Christchurch between Darfield and Arthur's Pass. Covered in unique limestone boulders, the region is a favourite with rock climbers, students, scientists and tourists.

Sacred to the Ngāi Tahu people who refer to it as Kura Tawhiti which translates as 'the treasure from a distant land', it became the first reserve in the country dedicated to the protection of a plant when Dr Lance McCaskill started his mission to save the Castle Hill buttercup in the early 1950s.

Scenes from the 2005 movie 'The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe' were filmed nearby.

The weathered limestone formations at Castle Hill are some of the most impressive in the entire world. The open landscape is great for exploring or taking the dog for a walk, and is ultimately a great free winter activity.
