Castlepoint is a beautiful beachside town on the eastern coastline of the Wairarapa.
Castlepoint was named by Captain Cook in 1770 due to its shape which made it look like a castle. It is now popular with beach-goers escaping the Wellington rat-race for the weekend.
Relax on the white sandy beaches, walk through the woods and climb the 162m high Castle Rock or clamber around the base of the Castle Point Lighthouse. If you are feeling adventurous then see if you are brave enough to explore the caves nearby.

Whether you take a walk along the beach, climb up on to the reef or visit the lighthouse, the views are amazing. Fur seals can be sometimes seen, sunning themselves on the rocks beneath the lighthouse. Fur seals can bite, so don’t get too close and if it is really windy standing on the reef, maybe not the best place to be.
You see this iconic beach and lighthouse in postcards and all over instagram! It's definately an iconic landmark for the Wairarapa. A beautiful "insta" worthy beach that's an essential must see if you are in the area. People all over the country know this beach because of it's lighthouse, go and take a look!
I love a good Kiwi roadtrip and one I have on my to-do list is a roadie that a few of my close friends can't stop raving about. It's the coast road that runs from Napier to Wellington and takes in the beautiful sights from Masterton's iconic Castlepoint Beach and right around the east coast to Palliser Bay. Long, flat stretches of road give way to beautiful beach vistas and it's one of the most untouched parts of the North Island. I can't wait to pack my car and leave!
For a fun family day at the beach, the picturesque Castlepoint on the East Coast of Wairarapa is good for both parents and kids. Let the kids and dog loose on the beach with some cricket or football, go fishing, watch the surfers or go swimming. For some exercise, trek up the family-friendly path to the lighthouse or head up the hill overlooking the lagoon. There’s a store if you are needing an icecream or a cool drink and if you want to make a weekend of it, book a unit at the camping ground.
Rugged and remote are just two of the many adjectives you can use to describe Castlepoint. The windswept western Wairarapa coastline is a weekend retreat for many Wellingtonians wanting to get away and it's where I like to go for a surfing adventure. Even when the surf is flat there is plenty to do with the lighthouse and beachside hikes nearby. And if you brave the elements in autumn or winter then you will have the place to yourself!
