We came here for a lazy Sunday morning breakfast but be warned, they don't serve your conventional eggs on toast kinda brekkie. They don't even have a coffee machine, but don't let this put you off - besides, who goes to a gastropub for breakfast anyway? Apparently we do. Their endless selection of beer is ideal for the craft bevie fan and the food is a bit of a mix of the usual pub food and some that are a bit left field - tacos, sliders, burgers, salads, stew and good old steak and vegetables. I had the Moroccan lamb tagine on buttered lemon rice (yes for breakfast..) and the lamb was falling apart and it definitely takes you to Morrocco (not literally though, just your taste buds) . Their beef stew is also hearty and delicious on winter's night - definitely hits the spot. The staff are super friendly and have a great sense of humour. This is also definitely the place to come to if you're hoping to catch the game on the big screen with the lads!

The Cav is well known for it's atmosphere during Rugby games and I have it on good authority that they will be screening several Rugby World Cup games here. It's a super relaxed spot with good hearty pub fare. I'll definitely be watching a few World Cup games at the Cav - see you there!

For all of the rugby fans I know, the only place in town to watch the game is the Cavalier Tavern on College Hill. The Cav is a major meeting place on game night, and always have several screens on the go, bar specials and more. It is great for bigger groups as there is plenty of space, and the pub fare on offer is definitely a notch or two above the rest.

The Cav used to be my work local, and it's still a great spot for a quiet drink in the late afternoon. Lots of heaters around the deck area, so you can sit outside but still be cosy, with a pretty great view of Auckland city too.

When there is a big game on (rugby) only one pub comes to mind to watch it. It's always the Cav. You do need to get down there early if your hoping to get a seat, otherwise you will be left standing for the whole game. Not a great idea if wearing heels and trying to have something to eat as well!

When I was at the Cavalier, or the Cav, as it is fondly nicknamed, the All Blacks were playing. Being one of Auckland’s best sports bars the joint was packed with AB supporters. The large spacious, colonial type pub has a couple of big screens and plenty of seating to fit in the fans. For smokers and those not so interested in watching the rugby there is a spacious deck. There's a good variety of beers on tap and I opted to get myself a Macs Gold, ordered some food and then joined in for a night of fun as we watched the kiwis cruise to victory. The atmosphere was great, the beer cold and the food hearty. Sounds like a recipe for success to me.

The Cav is awesome, other than the bar staff being really good looking on a saturday afternoon - It is everything you would want in a proper pub, great surroundings, great beers on tap, nice wine selection and fantastic food on offer. They take on all types of function for weddings, stag, hen parties and the platters they make for the functions are un belivable. If your looking for a nice pub for a chat and where kids are welcome - The cav is for you.

This place is a superb watering hole I've been coming to the Cav for years, it is by far ( in my opinion ) the best pub in Ponsonby and the surrounding area. The staff are fantastic, the alcohol is nicely priced they have a massive selection of wines, spirits and the views of Auckland on a sunny day are awesome. The pub is always buzzin during most sporting events most notibly any rugby league but most sports are giving an airing. The food is really good as well, big meals and reasonable prices and quick service. Like I said been coming here for 10 years on and off and its always that same great atmosphere. Long live the cav!!

A lovely, well preserved Victorian pub on College Hill, just across from my old school. Offering a lovely setting for after works drinks, a lovely place to catch up with friends on a summer's evening on the large outdoor deck. Fixtures and fittings reminescent of a time long gone, and also has modern stuff ... like a big telly to watch the rugby. An historical spot to imbibe and catch up with mates.
