Coes Ford is located on the Selwyn River 32 kms from central Christchurch. Named after pioneer farmer Jack Coe whose land bordered the river, the ford was originally a main link between Springston and Leeston. Replaced by the present culvert in 1998, it serves as a bridge and a ford when river levels are high.

A popular recreational spot in the 1920s and 30s when bathers would dive off surrounding trees to take a swim, today it consists of a grassy domain suitable for picnics with toilet facilities and a campground nearby. Swimming is not advised due to water pollution levels.

A great place to head out with your mates or to use a final destination for a ‘car rally’ …. just check to make sure there is actually water in the ford because sometimes in drought conditions its very very low. But still a great place to get away from it all and enjoy a picnic, BBQ and a game of cricket with the kids and your mates. REMEMBER: to always TAKE YOUR RUBBISH HOME WITH YOU
