These days, I never trust a shop which advertises just "fish" on the menu, but this one passes my most basic criteria: actual filleted fish on display, and more importantly, the actual name/species of said fish fillets. So today we have Cardinal, NZ Monkfish, Tarakihi and Snapper, which they'll cook to your liking. I picked out the ever so popular Tarakihi to be battered as my "fish" for today, along with some salt and pepper squid and chips for a mixed "combo" order, enough to feed 2 hungry adults for lunch. Fish is cooked perfectly, crispy batter on the outside encasing a very moist and flakey Tarakihi fillet on the inside, with steam rising up upon each bite... just like it should. Being one of the regional "best chip shop" finalist for 2011, their chips are also crispy yet fluffy on the inside, and well seasoned. The squid however was slightly disappointing, more breading than actual squid, and taste like it was from a frozen pre-made product. The tartare sauce was alright, although I was expecting more as its emphasis was on the word "homemade", no capers or tarragon was detected in this, and I would like to see more and chunkier pieces of gherkins/pickles to make it stand out from any commerically made store-bought variety. Overall, a very good local fish & chips shop to have around, and certainly wouldn't mind dropping past again to pick up something for a feed if I happen to be in the area.
Fish and chips the way i remember growing up! This shop has great fish, chips and burgers. We have also purchased fresh fish from the counter window and have always found it to be very good quality fish. The staff are very friendly and has become a Friday night regular for us. Reasonable parking outside shop, as long as they are not too busy, if they are busy, there is plenty of parking in Glenmall which is just around the corner from the fish shop. Very good Kumara chips! i

This is our regular Friday night stop on the way home for ours and the kids dinners. The quality seemed to drop off a bit when they changed ownership last. Year, but in the last few months they are right back to where they were. great fish and chips, never low quality. Can be busy though so be prepared to wait at the busy times
