New Zealand's Glacier Country is home to spectacular remnants of the last Ice Age, providing a breathtaking background to road trips down South.
Named after the visit of Prime Minister of New Zealand Sir William Fox in 1872, Fox Glacier is on the West Coast of the South Island and is 13km long, one of the biggest glaciers in Westland Tai Poutini National Park, and only 23km south of Franz Josef. In a seemingly contradicting way, its survival depends on the dense rainforest it extends into, which is also explorable for scenic walks- with a short, 20 minute wander, you can follow a stream into the rainforest, where glow worms are noticeable after dark.
Being the largest commercially guided glacier, there are numerous adventures waiting to be experienced. From hour long walks along Lake Mahetheson, famous for its picture-perfect reflections of surrounding mountains, to skydiving in what was voted the 2nd most scenic skydive in the world. You can even have a go at vertical ice climbing, complete with pic axes and icicles, just don't feed the kea!
Fox Glacier is superb. This free and popular tourist attraction should be on every New Zealander’s bucket list. I love it for it’s history and the educational boards at the base of the glacier. Listen closely, and you may hear it move deep under ground! Best way to view this glacier is by helicopter.
