Quite possibly my favourite township in all of the West Coast, Franz Josef is not only a cool place to hang, but the glacier is very iconic. I love climbing it or simply taking a helicopter over top!

The Franz Josef Glacier is simply stunning. See it up close by walking the 5.4 km return track (which takes approximately 1.5 hours). This glacier (along with the Fox glacier) is one of the best things to do in NZ, and it’s free!

One of the world’s most accessible glaciers, Franz Josef is a 12 km long glacier best explored by helicopter. There are a couple of excellent helicopter companies in the area to show you the most amazing views of the South Island.

A childhood favourite, I love Franz Josef Glacier for its spectacular history, views and walking potential. Not just limited to walking, you can ski, bike and kayak in the area too.

There is nothing more awe-inspiring and humbling than taking a trip to one of New Zealand's most beautiful natural wonders, the Franz Josef Glacier. I've only been here once but I will never forget the moment I clapped eyes on its beauty. Stay at Okarito Beach on a full moon and you can see the big, bright moon rise above the glacier. It's the stuff NZ Tourism videos are made of but it's real life. I can't wait to come back here and am planning a trip again very soon.
