Golden Dawn is a great bar, doesn't matter on the weather golden dawn is great whether is sunny or raining. If it is sunny, I recommend taking full advantage on their bar outside. The food is great and they change the menu frequently so you can always guarantee something new and delicious to eat. Decent wine and beer selection also. It is a bit tricky to find but that simply adds to the bars mysterious and quirky atmosphere.
I know I've been here several times, but I struggle to remember the details. I know I've been because I can see the receipts in my wallet, but these always seem to be from late at night. Judging by the number of receipts, I always seem to come back, so they must be doing something right! Seriously though, this is a great late night spot, a bit über-trendy but they have Hallertau craft been on tap, which makes up for any Ponsnobbyness.
It' one of those bars you can walk right past and yet it's always busy. We managed to find a possie inside which is rare on a cold night. The boyf was feeling sick so didn't feel like booze and when he asked the bartender (Hannan) for a tomato juice, he reacted a if he's been waiting all week for someone to give him that opportunity. He recommended a virgin mary and got stuck in making the best version I have ever tasted. I'll definitely come back for that alone and I'm not usuallly a fan! It was spicy and earthy with celery bitters and a hunk of cucumber on the side. My boyf went for a second round and we think it may have even cured his lurgy. He also recommended a very thrifty glass of Beaujolais for me and we added the boadbean and mozzarella with torn bread to keep us going. This probably isn't something you can ideally share with another - unless you know them really really well. But we got through it and it was very good. Minty with peas and leons it fel almost too fresh for winter but hit the spot nonetheless!
This little hidden away bar is awesome! If you are not from Ponsonby you could be forgiven for never having heard of it, but it's worth checking out. We ventured out in the pouring rain and were very pleased we did. We were instantly welcomed into the bar which was warm and toasty and instantly felt at home. The staff were great with an awesome atmosphere - a mix of locals, business people and old friends. We headed outside and it was awesome! I could imagine that this is the best spot in town on a sunny day, with warm heaters, lots of cool tables and a stage for events. We had a great time here, the food was perfect and I loved my mulled wine - perfect for a wet, wintery day!
