The Golden Dawn is one of Ponsonby’s most popular bars. Something about the simple decor, the limited drinks menu and the uncomplicated but delicious food has captured the imagination of Auckland’s influencers. In the evenings it’s known to get pretty wild as bands and DJs change the vibe completely. Rumour has it that it’s not going to be around too much longer so try it out while it’s still here!
If you're hipster (or you're not, but, you know, you are, kinda...) you'll love it here. Great staff, very cool back patio, random live music and a true collection of individuals make this a fun spot for a Saturday night. Bring a group of friends, or just one to sit and people watch with. Easy, fun, very chill.
I hate lining up in lines almost more than anything - this has become typical of Golden Dawn. To avoid my #2 hate (lines) I opt to go to Golden Dawn early, that way there's more room so you can order their reasonably priced and DELICIOUS food. Holy moley I think the food here is possibly in the top 5 great eats of Auckland. The garlic butter isn't just garlic butter - it's smoked and honestly the greatest garlic butter I've ever had, hands down. They now do those mini burgers like depot. It is a bar - so I guess it's bar food, but it's an experience that surpasses any bar meal experience you've had. And if you go early you can enjoy the last of the summer sun for the evening in their festive looking garden bar!
If you're in and around Ponsonby this summer you have to check out this bar. It's got the cutest court yard that lights up beautifully in the evening. They always have great bands or Dj's, a great selection of food drinks and if you happen to be there on a Sunday when they have their Gyspy Fair you will not be disappointed with all the creative and interesting people that come to sell their stuff. One of my favorite bars in Auckland by far.
Golden Dawn and Eat Here Now are reuniting with the second in their Sunday Lunch series. Interestingly, they’re going meat-free, but promise the kind of flavours that will melt the heart of even the most meat-loving foodie. Golden Dawn have revealed the delicious sounding lineup, which includes: Buffalo mozzarella & broad bean salad, charred eggplant, Middle Eastern sweet and sour cherry tomatoes, spelt risotto and much more! Tickets to this beastless feast are $45. The meal begins at one.
I'm gonna be honest I think Ponsonby is the most overrated night out in the world. The bars are terrible the vibe has no class all the bars play horrible music. THEN... I come to the Golden Dawn, its a safe haven from all the rubbish that goes on in the rest of the strip. Its tucked away nicely away from the general public, when you go inside its looks great and the atmosphere is always first class. The nights are generally based around some music theme. Not all the DJ's deliver but its not like I'm in New York, Berlin, Manchester or Ibiza so it will do. It is the best bar Ponsonby. No doubt. Oh and they do mulled wine, my mrs loves that. Actually if you go in on a quite night its actually really nice to sit around the front bar and have a few drinks and even mess around on that piano.
