Cambridge is one of my most favourite little towns, and located just 6km south of it is the awesome Mighty River Domain, which sits on the banks of Lake Karapiro. Covering 19 hectares of park land, it's perfect for a quite picnic with someone special. I love heading down there for a day trip over summer and watching rowers and water skiers make waves on the lake.

Nothing is fresher or more satisfying than catching your fish dinner yourself. There are brown and rainbow trout aplenty in Lake Karapiro…so they say, though part of the fun is guessing at what depths and what flies will entice them to bite! The best fishing is at the head of the lake by the Arapuni dam, though trolling the lake edges has also been known to land a laudable ten-pounder or two! Lake fishing is a great way for kids to get involved in putting food on the table and learning about the food chain, and you’ll create treasured family memories while putting tucker on the table (if you’re lucky!).

Great spot for a visit. Cycling from Cambridge to lake Karapiro on the Cycle way.

If you’re counting on catching tonight’s dinner, just head to Lake Karapiro. Around 2,000 rainbow trout and 500 brown trout are released here annually by Fish and Game – with the average size increasing each year. You’ve got excellent chances of landing a fish or two here – in fact, you might even catch a ten pounder! Shore fishing here is tricky due to thick vegetation, but you can try trolling or harling further upstream.

Enjoy an afternoon at Lake Kapirio, a stunning lake domain just out of Cambridge. I find that fresh water swimming can be hugely invigorating, but if that doesn’t tickle your fancy there’s a whole heap of alternative activities available too, such as kayaking or swinging through the high ropes course. Kids and teenagers love this spot - it's a great place to burn off some energy. Plus there's lots of places for family picnics and also secret pockets of tranquility to nestle down quietly with a book.
