Located six kilometers from Fox Glacier in the West Coast region, Lake Matheson is one of New Zealand's most photographed scenic attractions. Famous for its reflected views of Mount Tasman and Mount Cook which create a stunning mirror view on calmer days, the lake was formed by glaciation 14,000 years ago.

An easy walking track surrounds the lake and is suitable for people of all fitness levels. The walk is 2.6 kilometers in length and takes approximately 1 ½ hours to complete.

The lake is also home to the long finned eel along with many native birdlife species.

One of the more popular destinations on a tourist’s to-do list, Lake Matheson is a spectacular sight on the West Coast. There’s a lovely 40 minute walk to take to get up close to the lake and has amazing lake views and reflections. It’s one of the best lakes in NZ!

Not too far from Fox Glacier, Lake Matheson is a glorious display of Mother Nature. I like taking a stroll around the lake and marveling at the stunning wildlife and fauna.
