Ponsonby Central is such a cool little haunt and wonderful for exploring with friends and out-of-town visitors in the weekend. We came here on a Saturday mid-way during a shopping mission and sitting down for a crispy coconut chicken taco and margarita at Maldito Mendez was like finding the ultimate oasis. But the reason Maldito is such a Mexican food hot spot is all because of its excellent churros with cinnamon and chilli spiced chocolate. My friend and I shared our dessert because we didn't think we'd fit it all in. We were wrong. It was so good that I'll be back again soon to indulge in a full serve of churros, all for myself!
So, this place is a cozy wee nook in Ponsonby Central but my, my, it has some very spectacular Spanish/Mexican food! I had the clam, squid and chorizo paella and broccolini to share with my squeeze, and a killer virgin margarita, and we both left full and happy. The interior is fabulous and the atmosphere buzzing. Go there now.
The best dining spots to hit when the mercury dives are those that serve great food with more than a hint of spice. Maldito Mendez does exactly that, and have a menu that changes according to fresh produce on offer so there is always something there that is bound to surprise. Good Hibiscus Margaritas too.
Ponsonby Central is the cool kid on the block. It’s brimming with various pop up stores, cafes, street food inspired eateries and grocery shops. I ordered the beef quesadilla from Maldito Mendez, it was served with a generous dollop of sour cream, black beans and salsa. The meat was tender and well seasoned. Definitely worth a try if you’re in the area.
