Doesn’t the best food come from street vendors who are skilled at using simple ingredients to create amazing flavours?

Mamak has brought the name, the dishes, flavours and passion for great Malaysian street food to the Chancery square. Enjoy different varieties of homemade roti canai, with a great assortment of fillings, drink teh tarik or Kopi to or try a Murtabak, a stuffed roti pancake.

Like most Mamak stalls Mamak also serves many varieties of rice, nasi lemak , curry chicken and nasi goreng, as well mee goreng (fried noodles) and other noodle dishes.

According to the resident 'uncle', Mamak means Uncle in Malaysian Indian / Tamil language. The very reference gives off a homely vibe and this quaint little restaurant doesn't disappoint with its delicious home-style cooking. I tried the beef rendang with rice and roti, and a drink of teh tarik - made from black tea and condensed milk. Watching Uncle make the teh tarik - pouring the beverage back and forth between two pots - was a treat. My favourite aspect of the venue is all the sayings written up on the walls inside. Providing you the opportunity to speak a little Bahasa Melayu (Malaysian language) yourself! Makanan memang enak!

Mamak Malaysian Restaurant has only been opened for a few months, but has already set a new standard for smart casual Malaysian dining in Auckland. Jeffery and Charlotte have opened an inviting eatery right in the heart of the CBD. I loved the minature jug presentation for their teh ais (iced tea $5.00). They make their own roti canai ($9.00) which is served with dhal, tumeric cabbage and fish or chicken curry. Other dishes which I highly recommend are Mamak mee goreng ($13.50), chicken murtabak  (chicken mince and onion omelette wrapped with roti and served with cabbage and dhal, $13.50) and nasi lemak (coconut rice served with cucumber, ikan bilis, peanut, egg and a choice of chicken or beef rendang $12.50). This is now my to-go place for both a quite bite or a pleasant place to while away the time with friends over a teh tarik and a roti canai.
