If you’re looking for ambience, great food and great drinks look no further. The outdoor courtyard provides an excellent setting for a more relaxed date, while the indoor setting definitely allows for a more intimate feel. Knowledgeable and attentive staff provide you great service and the ability to make some extremely great cocktails helps a lot as well. An excellent choice for those with a little more in the pocket or those who have been together for a while looking for a excellent date night.
I first visited Matterhorn as a poor university student several years ago, and by 'visited' I mean I walked in, took in the swanky vibes and the menu prices and walked straight out with my tail between my legs. That first intimidating impression made its mark and so on a recent trip to Wellington, half a decade later and with a healthier bank account, I decided to revisit the place for real. My boyfriend and I had the Chef's Tasting Selection to share and I have to say, it's one of the best 'degustation' experiences I have had. Dish upon delicious dish came out one after the other in a seemingly endless stream, each just as tasty and innovative as the next. My favourites were the trevally on handmade flaxseed crackers and the wagyu fat potatoes, but everything was so very good, and only at $60 a head! I feel like that's a huge bargain for food at that level + quantity. The decor is slick, our waiter was very friendly and helpful and there was a real buzz about the place. I will most definitely be back!
There’s nothing casual about the Matterhorn, even if you’re just in the mood for a relaxed glass of wine. The attention to detail, the typically excellent service and the extensive drinks and tapas menu are what make the Matterhorn a cut above the rest of the bars on Cuba St. Its courtyard area is a pleasant place to enjoy a drink in summer, though less so if you’re a non-smoker.
The Matterhorn is another place that gets food to drink with oh-so-right. White bean & lemon dip, crisp pita bread & spring onion relish! Yellowfin tuna, white miso, radish, sesame, house-made ponzu & chargrilled tortillas! Etc, etc. I have very little bad to say about a drink and a bite (or twenty) here.
