Nestled down an alleyway just down from Cuba Streets iconic bucket fountain you will find this hidden gem. Sit by candlelight for dinner in the restaurant, or head out the back and get amongst the atmosphere in the garden bar whilst the friendly bar staff serve you (smokers can feel at home here also - warm heaters!). So far I've only been for drinks - in which the service was fantastic. The staff knew their wines, and can whip up nearly any cocktail you can think of. The crowd is usually very diverse, ranging from uni students to suits converging for an unpretentious, relaxed high quality experience.
Matterhorn is a Wellington monument, and one of the city's most highly rated bar-restaurants, as well-equipped for you to have a beer as a three-course meal. Fireplaces ensure the inside is always toasty, tantalizingly lit and intimate, while the enclosed outdoor area in the back is lively and vibrant. Great food and atmosphere.
Find the entrance to Matterhorn tucked in between a comic shop and a clothing store called Rex Royale. It got the gong for best bar in the world a while back, and it’s still really good. They do lovely refreshing jugs to share in summer, and deep and complex gentleman’s drinks. With over 30 cocktails on the menu, plan a big night.
