Although the name suggest it's a Bar, make sure you go prepared to eat... there's no way you can look past the yummy tapas menu! The only thing that I didn't like about Mondial, was that they didn't give you a menu, it's written across the wall. So if you've got you're facing the bar you're going to have to rely on others to let you know what looks good. There is also some on the mirror, which in the dark light is really hard to see. Don't get me wrong though... I love this place!
Mondial is a friendly spot hidden between these grittier Grey Lynn shops. There are no printed food menus so you generally order at the counter from the giant blackboard, but once you sit down the service is fast and friendly, with food emerging quickly from the kitchen, piping hot. We had the snapper ceviche, calamari, cajun chicken and croquettes, and the pick of the bunch were probably the cajun chicken skewers - juicy, flavourful and perfect. The sangria jug is $40 but still great value, plenty in there and very tasty. A great place to meet friends or just if you can't be bothered to cook!
What's not to like? The tapas is varied and delicious, the wine list is affordable and diverse, the atmosphere is cosy and intimate, but there's enough seating for a crowd. Seriously. I wish I was there right now. Mmmm...Grilled chorizo with onion jam! Tender lemon pepper calamari! All washed down with quarts of delicious sangria!!
Get there early and hang around till you find a place to sit — Mondial is never empty! Be sure to check out the back outdoor area, it's under cover and nicely heated, also a little more room to breathe. The food is fantastic and the wine is even better. Don't leave without trying the meatballs. Wowers!
