Chef Che Barrington is all about Asian fusion, with strong Thai influences to tease your taste buds with salty, sweet, hot and sour. MooChowChow is all about sharing and experiencing. The wine list is extensive and reasonable and the fresh fruit cocktails with crushed herbs are a delight.

Lunch is causal and relaxed. Dinner is busy, pumping and may mean sharing table space. Crampons are recommended to reach the dizzy heights of the upstairs bathroom. After several cocktails, how some make it down without just the aid of gravity is a miracle.

Sounds awesome! Thanks for the tip!

I chose Moochowchow for my birthday dinner with friends and was not disappointed. The food was sensational and the cocktails even more so. It has to be said though that the service was a bit lacking. Upon arrival we were curtly told we had to leave by 8:30pm - our arrival was 6:30. Then we were seated and there were not enough menus for everyone in the group to have one and upon enquiring if we could get more the answer was that there were no more available in the restaurant! Then a meal was forgotten. And by the time we got to dessert it was time for us to leave so we missed out. But the food made up for it all luckily and I will definitely return!

I had one of the most memorable dinners here - absolutely yummy food! Share style restaurant, it’s best to go as a group so you can try a but of everything. The prawn salad is a must - refreshing and light it can cool down the heat from some of the burning hit dishes (if they say it’s hot - it is)!! Service is second to none and the atmosphere is warm and inviting. Everyone (incl the staff) seem to be having a great time! Book ahead for large groups. P.S. don’t get the Moo Bar for dessert - its a complete let down.

My partner and I were quite excited to have Thai night out with a Touch of class so we headed to Moo Chow Chow.  With reservations made in advance we were greeted with a peppy smile, directed to our table and asked if we would like our jackets to be hung.....Yes please! I was impressed.  Soaking in the intimately lit atmosphere and wood panelled walls, my eye was drawn to the unusual light fixtures that dangled from above.  What a fantastic job they have done transforming this old house into a local hot spot. The music was fantastically eclectic, from French lounge to some classic 70’s rock.   As we looked over the small list of menu items we realised that the majority of the menu caters to a spicy palette.  Which my partner loves and I can only handle small doses of.  But what we were in for was another level. We started off mild with the Duck Spring roll. It is served as one large spring roll to share with fresh green herbs pyramided on top and sitting in juice that was to die for. WOW! I could have eaten plate after plate of this amazing dish, Beautiful!!!  Next we ordered the Mussaman Goat Curry packed with spuds, shallots and cashews. This is supposed to be one of their milder dishes…but wowzers! this packed a real punch, so even though the meat was as tender as anything the heat made it hard to stomach. My partner however, found it very authentic and loved it. Our second main was the Fish Of the Day Yellow Curry, which for us was Terakihi. If the Mussaman Curry set my mouth on fire this curry was like molten lava. I couldn’t taste a thing it was so, SO hot and even my partner who likes spicy food had to catch his breath after diving in a little too confidently. So what started off well went south very fast.  To beat the heat, captain courageous quickly washed his fish down with two ice cold Kirin beers pulled fresh off the tap and I grabbed the waitress quickly and pleaded for the the Oolong Peony tea which is supposed to help with the heat.  Eventually after a few sips my mouth was back from the inferno but I was done with my meal. My partner thought the fish was cooked beautifully and had a strong enough pallet to pick out the kafir lime and other classic Thai flavours fused richly into the dish, I however was left uncomfortable and still hungry. The ice cream on the menu sounded like a great relief so we dug into a beautiful Coffee Vanilla Ice cream with caramel sauce.  By the end of dessert I was still quite hungry as I really only got a couple bites of my meal in before giving up. Thankfully Civic video is located across the street with shelves full of comedy that would ease my painful night.

Previously Rocco, MooChowChow epitomises cool & hip vibe of Ponsonby with its modern twist on Thai cuisine. The whole restaurant is compacted into a tiny small villa, giving it an unique & intimate atmosphere. The lighting is warm and atmospheric. A very cool place to take a group of good mates and wash down the flavoursome Thai with some good fresh beer on tap.

I’ve been meaning to come here for ages and after seeing it on this weeks Master-chef I made a booking straight away!! The food is amazing - everything that it’s reputation says! Chief Che Barrington made us dish after amazing dish! It’s a eating house so sharing is ideal! Fully recommend the Hot and Sour salmon, the Five Spiced Chicken and the Corn Salad! Yum!!

Took 4 girlfriends and  totally enjoyed the food, still salivating.  It is tasty, with loads of fresh herbs, spices, couldn't fault it.  Slightly noisy only downside as a group wanting a good gossip

Best Oysters!! All the food is super tasty and well priced. Good selection on menu. Love walking past this place as there are always great smells coming from it!

Cocktails were a let down, the desserts were plain and the staff weren't very welcoming especially the maitre d'. On a plus side the pork was delicious and all very reasonably priced. Was rather disappointed with Moo Chow Chow, especially as I had been going to Rocco for years.

Great
