There's something a little different hatching atop of Mount Maunganui. Since Pokemon Go launched in New Zealand in July, "The Mount" is where many Bay of Plenty players have discovered characters to catch and eggs hatching. It's a steep walk up too so a great way to get a whole lot of exercise and enjoy a good hunt.

A snap of our favourite maunga, or mountain, is a must for every traveller. The cone-shaped volcano rising up on the horizon can be seen from north to south welcoming travellers to The Bay. It’s the best vantage point for a panoramic view and a beautiful place to be in touch with nature.

Our maunga is much-loved and the volcanic cone can be seen on the horizon throughout the Bay. From the easily-accessed base track it is easy to get a taste of what a wonderful wildlife sanctuary it is for resting seals, shags, black-backed gulls and penquins. If you visit early in the morning the chances of seeing dolphins and orca cruising by is high. It is well-visited and the climb to the top is worth it for the awesome views from Coromandel Peninsula to East Cape on a clear day. There is a superb camp ground on the lower reaches in Mount Maunganui itself.

This iconic mountain, is known by its Māori name Mauao and is the most loved landmark in the Bay. The extinct volcano cone rises up at the end of a built-up peninsula and is flanked with a safe sandy harbour beach on one side and the spectacular ocean-side surf main beach on the other. The views from the top are breathtaking, although it takes a bit of effort to get there. Alternately there is a more sedate and just as spectacular 45-minute walk around the base.

The region’s favourite landmark and best walk, views and vantage point to survey the Bay with extensive views from the Coromandel to the East cape on a clear day and smoking volcano Mayor Island. Don’t worry if you aren’t fit the bast track takes in some stunning coastal scenery and remains of old Maori Pa middens and is an easy 40 minute stroll.

Beautiful Scenery

Mauao, the local landmark etched on the skyline is recognisable from the top of the Kaimais and up and down the coast. It’s my favourite playground and to see it means I’m back in The Bay. A visit to this beautiful reserve is a must-do no matter what your fitness level. I find peace just sitting on main beach and looking up at the volcanic cone. The 3.4km base track is suitable for strollers and wheelchairs and only takes a 45-minute stroll. Keep an eye out for nesting black-backed gulls and pied shags. The western lower slopes are laden with pipi shells from pre-European Maori middens. You might even spy a resting penguin or seal. If you’re feeling energetic choose a track and climb the 232 metre-high summit and take a few minutes to enjoy the best view around. I love this mountain for its beauty, wildlife, history, breath-taking views and exercise.

The Mount is such an awesome place to live, you can relax or get busy, lots of good pubs, restaurants, the beach, walks etc etc...luv it!

Up, around or even just beside. Go for a walk and enjoy the views on offer. Stunning every time.
