Ngamotu Beach (meaning 'the islands' in Maori) is a black sand beach located at the western end of New Plymouth's coastal walkway. A playground for local families since the early 20th century, it is popular with kids in summer and surfers during autumn and winter. Considered the safest swimming beach in the district, it is surrounded by houses looking out over Port Taranaki.

Playing an important role in local history, the first Europeans landed here in 1823, followed by a bloody battle in 1832 and the later discovery of oil.

Regular events include triathlons and open water swims.

The top destination for families this summer has got to be Ngamotu Beach, the waves are low, the black sand is hot, and there’s heaps of room for everyone! Bring the BBQ down and have a family get together by one of the picnic tables, it’s always been a favourite pastime of mine. Make sure you set up camp not far away from the playground to keep the kids entertained after their swim!

If you want to learn to swim, sail, kayak, or windsurf, Ngamotu beach is your best bet to kick start your leaning of a new sport. The beach is surrounded by ships, having the port on the left and the harbour with the nice boats and yachts on the right, so there’s always something to look at! It’s also the number one spot for school beach days and sand sports such as beach volleyball.

Ngamotu Beach is the place to go when you’re with the family and want a nice day out celebrating that Spring is finally in the air! I know it’s not quite summer yet, but it’s just getting warm enough to have a little dip, play in the sand, and have a few sneaky barbeques. It’s definitely the safest beach to go in New Plymouth and there’s no chance of encountering a shark or jellyfish! As well as no scary wildlife, there is also very little waves since it is inside the breakwater barriers. If your child can swim (or if they can’t, get in there with them!), you’ll have a fun day. Don’t forget the sunscreen!
