Nikau cafe finds perfection in the simplicity. Focusing on seasonal, organic and regional food, whether it is a simple radicchio and Gorgonzola salad or their infamous Kedgeree, you know Kelda's dishes will be fresh and delicious. Their crowning glory however, must be their sage fried eggs. A level above your standard brunch fare, it is one of those dishes you'll be dreaming of days later. Paul, who mans the front of house, and his bearded smile welcomes you with the same hospitality he would if he was inviting you into his very own dining room.

Nikau is one of the coolest little cafes in Wellington. Not only is the cafe within an art gallery, making it pleasing to the eye, the food is to die for. The fennel, tomato and white bean soup is no exception. The soups at Nikau are available either by the cup or bowl full, so whether you're after a full meal or a quick pick me up, they have your back!
Inside City Gallery lies this wonderful cafe, with a seasonally changing menu with local produce. This place is definitely one of the top long lunch spots, either starting with the breakfast or lunch menu, you can find yourself spending a long time here. Another place with highly attentive and skilled staff members, you can easily spend a long time over lunch here. Or better yet, simply go and wander the always great and thought provoking exhibits and installations in the gallery before or after your lunch to make a whole afternoon of it. Highly advised dining.
When you visit a city you always want to know where the locals go - and that’s Nikau. In the quest to reveal Wellington’s most well-known dish (amongst my very passionate local friends anyway), it was Nikau’s kedegree with house smoked fish that had the majority of them salivating. But if you’re not a seafood fan (don’t fret!) they’re great at everything here and they really do care about what’s delivered to your table - which sits in a sun-drenched room next to the Wellington Art Gallery.
Hidden away above Munn's (The Man's Store), down a real rabbit-warren of a corridor (if you're tall, or even average height, watch your head), is Nikau Cafe. Despite its tucked-away location, it's always bustling, and that's testament to the consistently excellent quality of the food (both cabinet and menu) and coffee. Their salted caramel cookie is one of the best sweet treats in Wellington , and it's not only enormous, but $3.50, making it excellent value, too. But be warned, it gets full between 11am and 1pm, so it pays ahead to book if you're with a group.
