Nikau cafe finds perfection in the simplicity. Focusing on seasonal, organic and regional food, whether it is a simple radicchio and Gorgonzola salad or their infamous Kedgeree, you know Kelda's dishes will be fresh and delicious. Their crowning glory however, must be their sage fried eggs. A level above your standard brunch fare, it is one of those dishes you'll be dreaming of days later. Paul, who mans the front of house, and his bearded smile welcomes you with the same hospitality he would if he was inviting you into his very own dining room.

Consistently great food, great people and one of the most gorgeous, light-filled spaces in the city.

The best cafes for brunch are happy to let you add or subtract items from their standard dishes, but Nikau’s dishes are completely customisable. If you’re eating paleo, you can order eggs any which way and a meat of your choice without the awkward "hold the bread, tomatoes…" spiel.

Nikau Cafe is best-known for its big breakfasts, which you can customise yourself: perfect for vegetarians or vegans tired of asking for "the big breakfast, but hold the bacon". The fried eggs in sage, though simple, are particularly delicious.

Tucked behind the Wellington City Gallery on Civic Square, Nikau is best known for its eggs-any-which-way brunch menu and popularity with professionals in need of a caffeine hit. As such, it’s not the first cafe that springs to mind when you’re in the mood for a light savoury snack, but it’s got great cabinet food, including pastries and its underrated cheese-and-herb scone. Best to get there before 12.30pm if you want to to choose from the full selection, though.

OMG the sage fried eggs

Tucked in behind City Gallery, Nikau is the perfect spot for a meeting or brunch date. Its menu offers fancy food at friendly prices - try their wintertime soups or the highly-recommended kedgeree - while the open atmosphere is a great space for creative discussions.

What better way to get away from the office than inside Wellingtons Art Gallery. Good coffee & free wifi make this spacious cafe a great place to meet friends to bring the laptop for some out of office working. The pear as custard brûlée is amazing!

New Zealand currency may not have a penny, but if it did, the halloumi and salad at Nikau would be worth every single one. If you're hesitating to cross the threshold from the City Gallery into this adjacent cafe, please take the plunge. Prices are high, but so is quality. I let out an audible "Yum" while taking a bite of bare halloumi. If you can fit more into your belly, don't leave without a creamy donut. Coffee and scones are also not to be missed.

I meet up with a few close friends every second Wednesday before work for Breakfast Club™. It is my favourite meal of the week. We started off cafe hopping but we've found ourselves going back more and more to Nikau. Their sage fried eggs are the best brunch you can chow into in Wellington, served with a side of their homemade baked beans and their fluffy baguette it's a slight twist on a classic breakfast item.

Nikau really stands out for me as the most lovely little cafe in Wellington. It’s got lots of competition, but has consistently delivered great, quality food with enough consistency (kedgeree anyone?) and variety to keep it really interesting. It’s also blessed with an amazing light filled setting nestled in Civic Square alongside the Gallery. A genuine Wellington gem.
