This almost hidden tidal beach is a great place to bring little ones for a day at the beach. The water is calm and shallow, so kids can play around in the water in a safe environment. When the tide goes out, you can collect cockles along the beach and give spearing some flounder a go if you want to try out fishing the old fashioned way.

This is a little bit hard to describe but if you drive from Paihia to Opua on SH11 you’ll see a large flat bay on your left. If you get to Te Haumi drive you’ve gone too far. This bay is an awesome and super safe place to bring the wee ones. It’s really shallow and very tidal. At low tide you can collect cockles from the sand, or you can fish the old fashioned way and spear some flounder with a sharp stick! There’s a cute little coffee cart there in the morning too incase you need a pick-me-up before your foray into flounder fishing.
