Opunake beach is located in the small town of Opunake on the south coast of Taranaki. The sheltered beach features volcanic black sand and there are rock pools at the northern end which are accessible at low tide.

Surrounded by picturesque Pohutukawa trees and with a couple of picnic tables on the grassy area, the beach is a popular holiday destination with a holiday park located onsite and boutique shops, cafes and art galleries nearby.

Suitable for swimming and surfing, it is known as 'the home of the big wave', with construction of an artificial reef planned but never completed.

Opunake beach is right beside the holiday park, it offers a variety of accommodation such as standard cabins, self contained units or just a humble patch of grass for your caravan or tent, each with power or no power for the real camping experience. The black sand beach is surrounded by beautiful pohutakawa trees and contains unique pieces of driftwood and some pretty decent waves for the sporty people out there, don’t forget the sunscreen!
