Oreti Beach lies in the central bay of the Foveaux Strait on the Southland coast. Located 13km west of Invercargill, the beach is a 26km stretch of perfectly smooth sand surrounded by dunes.

At the southern end is Sandy Point, a popular spot for walking, mountain biking and horse riding.

Southland's motorcycling hero Burt Munro practiced riding his Indian motorbike along the length of the beach, setting NZ Open Beach records before going on to break world records at the Bonneville Salt flats in Utah.

Scenes from the movie about his life ‘The World's Fastest Indian' were filmed here.

The location of Burt Munro’s famous stretch of race track, go for a walk, a run or just enjoy the scenery at Oreti Beach. I always like to take a picnic and spend an afternoon there.

This beach has a whole load of history – it was the location of Burt Munro’s race track, all 26 kilometre’s of it! In 1957 he set a New Zealand Open Beach record of 131.38 mph on this beautiful beach which is now used for family fun activities like mountain biking and horse riding.

Oreti Beach is a spectacular place to spend time. Not only is it glorious to look at but there's a whole lot of history here too, as seen in the movie about Burt Munro and his Indian motorbike.

Not only the location for the world-famous Burt Munro Challenge, Oreti Beach boasts 26kms of straight, clear beach. Pack your running shoes and your best friend to experience the fragrant, salty air after a long day at work. Guaranteed to refresh your body and mind – with some great bonding time in the process, Oreti Beach is a popular choice for many active pairs.
