When owners Josh Helm and Tom Hishon first met in London, they threw an Orphans' Christmas dinner every year so that they could get together with their other expat friends during this lonely holiday. These dinners were such a hit that they talked about opening a restaurant, and so Orphans Kitchen was born.

Located in Ponsonby, Orphans Kitchen is a no-bookings, casual kind of eatery that serves up an ever-changing menu of seasonal and interesting dishes. Pull up a sheepskin-covered stool and settle in for a night of great food and wine with friends.

Just opened but already applauded and hyped, Orphans Kitchen is worth all of the column inches - this place is great! Interesting takes on traditional dishes and a stellar, totally unique wine list get top marks from me, with the buzzing atmosphere an additional plus. This place has the wow factor and more!

best gnocchi ive ever had. great staff and great atmosphere. small menu but i still wanted to try everything. tamarillo shrub is def worth trying too!! Orphans Kitchen is definitely my favourite restaurant in Auckland at the moment and is a must visit for lovers of fine food!

There has been quite a fuss made about Orphans Kitchen lately, and deservedly so. It has fast become my favourite place to go for a meal and catch up with friends. The food is seasonal and simple but with huge flavours such as the fish of the day with cauliflower puree and pickled cauliflower, brussel sprouts with baby beetroot and goats curd and the deceptively simple Tina's wedge - a wedge of crisp iceberg lettuce with a tangy herb dressing. The wide, blonde wood benches are incredibly comfortable to lounge around and you will while away a night quite easily - as long as you can beat the crowds to a table.

Came here for dinner with the boyfriend as we had read many glowing reviews of the place and were keen to check it out. The live-edge high wood tables and sheepskin-covered stools gives this place a relaxed vibe but the food is definitely serious, as in seriously good. The menu is small but perfectly formed - we chose two little plates and two bigger ones to share. They were all amazing and beautifully presented but what stands out for me is the tuna belly plate (complemented with grapefruit) and the rye gnocchi - pillowy-soft yet slightly crispy at the same time. Amazing. Will definitely be back to try more of their ever-changing menu, and more of that gnocchi!
