People’s coffee offers a wholesome, feel good coffee experience, right down to the friendly, knowledgable staff. Specialising in fair trade organic coffee, made with Zany Zeus organic milk to boot, People’s is just a great business. The flagship store is tucked up on Constable street in Newtown, but you can find the delicious coffee at numerous cafes around the Wellington region, such as Milkcrate, and Vicbooks cafe.
In the heart of Newtown, long time local staple for its surrounding residents. This is a place that tries to push the new wave of coffee but has retained its 100% fair trade organic status. Pushing third wave coffee while retaining ethics is no easy task but one done incredibly well. The roasts here are all well developed and they offer a bean to suit everyone for home and also provide excellent espresso and filter options.
As the flagship for Peoples Coffee you are sure to find a great cup of coffee, either soft brew or espresso. The changing single origin is always worth a try if you like black coffee and ask about its suitability if you prefer things with milk. With a selection of treats provided by Leeds St Bakery if you’re around Newtown and want one of the best cups Wellington has to offer.
These guys know all things coffee related. I had been meaning to pop in and see them for the past couple of months but hadn't found myself in Newtown for a while. Made the effort when I picked up some fresh beans and needed a new V60 brew kit. They didn't have a grinder in their store so ran down the to pick me one up from their roastery. Legends. Plus the flat white I had while I waited was perfection in a cup.
The home of Peoples Coffee in Newtown is the perfect spot for a relaxed coffee, with inside and outside seating, a wide range of paraphernalia for brewing at home, and perhaps the best carrot cake this side of the Mt Vic tunnel. In summer, it’s also the home of the excellent Cold Flat White. A tip – aside from that day’s Dominion Post, there’s not much in the way of reading material, so bookworms are recommended to bring their own.
