I've been a local and a regular here for many years as Picollo was a stone's throw from our old property and their traditional pizzas pack a serious punch, thanks to the homemade tomato sauce that changes the flavour subtly with each new batch. Not to mention the fact that all of the salami is also hand-crafted with love! This kind of authentic Italian can be hard to come by in the suburbs of Auckland so if you are a westie like me, make this tucked away gem in Swanson Village, a never-fail staple. Or if you are passing through on your way to the beaches or the Waitakere Ranges, this place is worth a special trip.
Popped in here on the way back from the beach as it had great reviews on localist, and they were absolutely spot on! Great pizza at a great price with deals on multi buys too. If you live locally I’d phone in advance as this is busy pizza takeaway joint and it can take a while to cook, but when the food arrives it is great!
Definitely don't judge this book by its cover! It may look a little bit, ah... risky, but you walk in to be greeted by a really enthusiastic dude covered in flour and that really divine smell of freshly cooked pizza. It took a while to decide as there were a lot of options, all of which sounded just delicious. They have everything from the simply perfect margarita, to seafood, meatlovers, gourmet vegetarian, chicken and blue cheese and all sorts of tasty variations in between. I really wanted something with pineapple on it, so for the first time ever I ordered the Supreme. Boy, was it yum!! Lovely base, good amount of toppings and flavoursome flavours. We also got the Picollo Pizza, which had blue cheese and parsley. I thought they got the amount of blue cheese just right – enough to taste it without it overwhelming, but I would have liked a bit more parsely. The fries were just perfect to our taste – french cut and a bit crispy with an amazingly awesome garlic aoli. Yum! It's a wee bit out of our way, but I wouldn't count out another wee mission – especially for the fries actually!
Our adventure out West had us a bit concerned when we pulled up, but as soon as we set foot inside and smelled the aroma of authentic pizza, we knew we were in for a good pizza. So don't be deceived by the exterior - the signs are faded, the decor a bit drab but everything is clean and tidy. It was very obvious by the steady stream of people coming in to pick up their 'phone ordered' pizza's that the local's know what is good in this neck of the woods. Unfortunately a bit far away from our home to be a takeaway favourite, but next time we are out west at a beach we will definitely swing by.
