A great spot for fishing in the beautiful Bay of Islands, the Russell wharf is perfect for spending a few hours trying your hand at catching dinner.

Winter is better, as the fish are bigger and you're less likely to have to throw a few back, but it's good catching in summer too, with the area being very social and busy, full of tourists and locals soaking up the sun.

Not that you need another reason to come to Russell but their wharf is pretty good to fish off! Bustling with tourists and eccentric locals this is a great place just to people watch and if you want to cast a few lines you may as well. If you’re in luck you can catch snapper, trevally, john dory and parore off the pier. A word of warning, the legal size limit for snapper is 30cm. You’re more likely to catch full size ones in the winter time. In summer you may have to throw a few back!
