There is something about Six Barrel that evokes childhood memories. Maybe it is the chalkboard on the walls or that you can order a scoop of ice cream in your soda to make a spider! Complete the experience and take your mum along, enjoy bottomless coffee and share one of their salted caramel sundaes and spend an afternoon hanging out and listening to embarrassing stories from your childhood.
After heaving myself through work, the whole time wanting to dropkick a folder of Documents Released under the Official Information Act through the window, I needed to make something good happen. Six Barrel Soda Co. is covertly located on the second storey above Eva St (itself off Dixon St) in Wellington’s city centre. The burger buns are palm-sized, sandwiching grilled haloumi which was as squeaky a chew as I could’ve hoped. Caramelised onion and mayonnaise softening the cheese’s steady umami, Six Barrel’s haloumi burger is a simple but effective construction. It's a well-chosen dish for a café with a tiny kitchen. I ordered a soda, made from Doris and Satsuma plums, which was tight and tart and refreshing. A strange soda-carrying ship about to run aground on Te Aro park, Six Barrel is one of my favourite places in Wellington.
