Originating from the Otumuheke Stream which passes through a series of pools before it merges with the Waikato River, the stream is hot due to natural geothermal activity.
With varying pool temperatures according to your distance from the stream and levels of rainfall in the area, there is a walking track beside the stream and toilets facilities before you walk down to the park.

Spa Park Hot pools are awesome. It doesn’t cost me a cent to sink into the warm waters of the Otumeheke Stream. It’s a perfect free winter activity - I just need to remember to have a big towel waiting for me on the rocks nearby to wrap myself in as soon as I get out - Taupo air gets a wee bit chilly in winter!
I love heading over to the all-natural Spa Park Hot Pools after a long drive to Taupo. It's an awesome free swimming hole, thanks to Otumuheke Stream winding through a bunch of small natural hot pools around Taupo before linking in with the Waikato River at Spa Park. It's also a good place to catch up with the locals, wind down, and breathe in that clean, crisp Taupo air before the day's done.
