Don't go to a breeder, try the SPCA first.  We got our cat from here and they were totally awesome.  You can freely wander around the place, they'll tell you where to go, what to do and not do and then leave you alone.  When you're ready to look at a particular animal, they'll get them out for you.  We got our kitten from here and paid $150 BUT for that we got a kitten that was socialised, used to a litter tray, neutered, microchipped, vaccinated and came with 2 weeks free pet health insurance.  That would cost you a mint to sort out privately.  She was so lovely and we were so impressed that we went back for a rabbit...  Be warned...

We recently had the visit the SPCA after finding a hit, but still alive, kitten on the road. As tear-jerking as it was to see the poor little thing whimper away while no doubt being scared out of it's skin, it was a really lovely experience. Accompanied by my partner and two children, we had a great time jumping around the different pet areas. It's such a clean and tidy facility, and it's nice to see such loved pets considering the circumstances in which many arrived. The staff are absolutely fabulous! Love your work :) 09/05/2015 Changed my rating. See comment below

Oooh, and I'll be going here when it's time to find another addition to the family :)

Unfortunately my rating has changed since my initial posting from 5 starts to 4. I still acknowledge that the organisation does a fantastic job with all of the animals that they safe, help, and rehome. I do find their policy on destroying pitbulls purely because of breed horrific!

We've had two beautiful adult cats from the SPCA. It is a great organisation to support as they do so much to care for neglected, abandoned and runaway animals. I also take my toddler son there from time to time to look at the animals as he can see them through the glass and have the excitement of a close encounter with a furry friend with none of the risks!

Been in several times after we lost our gorgeous cat who was adopted to us from here via our good friend who is a foster home for kittens. They do superb work and really take care of the animals. Donate and take them your old blankets so the animals can benefit

My fat cat sits on the back of the old armchair watching the birds and purrs contentedly in the warm sun.  Adopted from the SPCA he came vaccinated, de-sexed & microchipped.  The advice was free flowing and my karma ratings went up by saving his life & giving him a loving home, which he now thinks he is the boss of.   Best place to adopt a new family member.

Tried to get him moments before sitting looking out the french doors the other way but alas not enough time in a day to try to get a pet to pose the way you want.. LMAO

We adopted one of our cats from the SPCA - they were super friendly, really caring and really helped us to find out a bit about our cat's history. The take home pack for new 'parents' is really helpful.  Much better experience than going through a pet shop or a breeder and you know you're helping re-home a cute and deserving animal!
