Te Kainga Marire - Maori for the peaceful encampment - is a skilfully designed and lovingly curated inner city garden in the New Plymouth Valley. Interesting textures, striking designs and native plantings weave around the natural landscape, alongside a coastal swamp forest remnant and a historical Maori Pa site.

The garden itself mimics New Zealand's natural environment with lush native trees, wetland plants and quirky form factors creating a wild but scenic outdoor experience. The gardens are open September through April when the plants are flourishing, making this little inner city gem the ideal outdoor escape during any season.

You know a place is great when it’s been given a 6 star rating; if that’s even possible! Bookings are essential and if you bring a small group there is even afternoon tea or lunch available. Te Kainga Marire is what New Zealand would have looked like if there were no exotic plants. What’s even more impressive is their organic vegetable garden!
