The Giant Among Us as Te Mata Peak is known sits as a striking landmark on the flat Heretaunga Plains. The park is on of the most loved in Hawke’s Bay. Walking paths and an adventurous mountain bike trail criss-cross the mountain. The views from the top are amazing and a must-see for tourists.

Standing 399 metres high Te Mata Peak is known as the Giant Among Us and is an iconic landmark in Hawke’s Bay. It has grand stand views across the Heretaunga Plains and is probably Hawke’s Bay most walked and loved mountain with many trails to choose from and one incredibly awesome mountain bike downhill trail. When the winds are blowing right it’s also a favourite with hang gliders.

Hawke’s Bay humans are so lucky to be able to share this amazing 99-hectare paradise with their furry friends. It’s an off-lead park, but the trust requests dog walkers always keep one on hand in case any woolly-four-legged grazers get in the way and Rover gets too excited. With so many walks to choose from there will be plenty of alternative track options. Pack a poo bag as well.

The much-loved local playground highly visible throughout Hawke’s Bay is one of my favourite recreation areas. The dramatic “giant amongst us” Te Mata Peak offers five diverse trails within the 99-hectare park ranging from 40 minutes to more than two hours. The peak rises to 399 metres so some tracks are steep and exposed. I love it for the powerful reflective energy evident in the fossilised limestone rock uplifted from the seabed millions of years ago, rock which once teemed with sea life now carries walkers, runners and mountain bikers, and for being able to get so close to the elements and the stunning views across the Heretaunga Plains. If time is short or you are feeling a bit lazy there’s a sealed road to the top.

Who needs Auckland’s Sky Tower when we’ve got the looming giant, Te Mata Peak, on our doorstep, with bird’s eye views across the Heretaunga Plains to the Kawekas, Ruahines and Cape Kidnappers, and on a clear day you can see right through to snow-capped Mount Ruapehu. I love it, because if I need a mountain to climb it’s the closest. At just under 400 metres it’s a good work out and depending how I feel there are five different tracks you choose. If you don’t quite feel up to the exertion just drive to the top look out and check out the view.

Views, sunrises, sunsets and treats are all ingredients for a Valentines romantic day out so why not grab a picnic or buy a special take-a-way and drive or hike the heights of the giant among us, our local mountain Te Mata Peak. Alternatively find a clandestine retreat among the Big Redwoods and pull out a bunch of wild flowers, a picnic basket packed with your partner’s favourite things, hold hands, tell them why you love them and share a magic moment in a special place.

Te Mata Peak, set in Maori folklore and sitting at 399 metres, this had got to be Hawke's Bay best urban hill walk, right in Havelock North's backyard with extensive paths. Love the seashell fossil's embedded into the rocks and the redwood grove. A great climb and a challenging mountain bike trail. There are even views across to Mt Ruapehu on a nice day.
