    Well-worth a trip out to the Hutt! The Dowse regularly hosts exciting exhibitions by international and Kiwi artists, with so much more than just canvases on a wall (think: fashion, multimedia, sculptures and structures).

      If the drive/bus/train out there doesn’t drain all their surplus of manic, energy, the scale of the place and almost daunting surfeit of beautiful cultural artefacts. According to my memory basically half of my childhood took place at the Dowse so it clearly worked for my parents. Though that may say more about it than about how effective the Dowse is as a kiddy calming place.

        Out in the wilds of the Hutt, the Dowse is always worth the trip up the island with its vast array of interesting works.

            Take a few hours out of your Saturday afternoon to visit The Dowse. Entry is free, and with exhibitions on in several gallery spaces, The Dowse is constantly changing. Check out the retrospective on Kobi Bosshard's jewelry, then pop over to Pic 'n' Mix, curated by kids-- both are on all winter. The Dowse boasts one of the best gallery shops I've seen, and a very sweet cafe attached-- their home brewed Shooting Star lemonade is a must-try. Stay for the weekend talks with the artists, or take a quick drive over to Petone for some serious op shopping.
