Places That Seem A Bit Like Polish Short Films
- 15Wellington International AirportRongotaiY’know the walkway that runs under the runway? That place is spectacularly bleak and I’m surprised that Youtube isn’t littered with emo montages by teenagers set there.
- 21New World Railway MetroPipiteaHave you ever been in the Railway Station with no one else there. That place is bleak as, man, bleak as.
- 33Westpac St James TheatreTe AroAnother place that when full of people is delightful and teeming with life, but when empty is an arena of echoing existential terror. Want to feel a profound moment of perspective? Stand on that stage without no one in the audience and look out at just the sheer space oppersively swallowing you.
- 42Skynet Gaming CafeTe AroThe biggest problem with these printing-need moments is the sheer time-pressure. It’s like when you lose your keys, it quickly evolves from being a simply annoying situation to a spiral of reminders of all the mistakes you’ve ever made. So you want helpful and quick people on your side and if you can’t make it to Warehouse Stationery (it is a little out of the way), then Skynet is a good (and surprising relaxed) alternative. They can be very understanding.

I Just Bloody Love Wellington's Libraries
- 114Wellington Central LibraryWellington CentralIf books were beds, this would be everywhere I’ve ever slept. I love this place. I will marry it when society opens up its mind to accept our love.
- 21Miramar LibraryMiramarA single snug glorious literature room out in the joyous jungle of Miramar. Right at the core of this area too.
- 31It’s in a cool shape, but it’s mainly on this list because there was a librarian who worked there when I was a kid (she issued me a lot of Tori Amos this woman, I was that kind of a child) who had a perfectly stereotypical South African accent. Like, y’know, the racist cliche voice people do. She had that. It was amazing.
- 41Karori LibraryKaroriA beautiful glass edifice to books. Impressive.

Improv Comedy in Wellington
- 112BATS TheatreMount VictoriaEvery year BATS is home to the Improv Festival, a week of made up funnies with companies from all over the country and all over the world contributing. The wide array of show means that there is a improv show on to suit anyone’s taste from the most grizzled improv veteran looking for things on the very cutting edge of the form to some mainstream chuckles for the man on the street.
- 24The Fringe BarTe AroEvery Wednesday at the Fringe Bar is WIT Wednesday where the Wellington Improv Troupe fills the place with giggles with one of their many different well-practised formats - my personal favourite is their long-running improv soap ‘The Young and the WITless’.
- 310Paramount CinemaTe AroEvery friday, hot new kids on the improv scene Playshop improvise up a storm with raw, wild abandon. All the theatre kids used to want to put on shows at BATS, now they just want to be in Playshop. It’s great and it’s a bit like a cult!
- 45Circa Theatre IncTe AroMost Sunday evenings of the year you can solid stalwarts of the Wellington improv scene the Improvisors. Their family friendly evenings of mirth are a staple of the Wellington cultural landscape and always worth a visit.

You have to watch someone's kids? Here's some places that will distract them!
- 18Carter ObservatoryKelburnThe sweet-as planetarium, the massive telescope, and the cool exhibits are all more than enough to keep some infuritating little children distracted from bitting at your knees. They might even learn some stuff.
- 221Wellington ZooNewtownControl the children by putting the fear of God into them by introducing them to all the things nature has made that are so ready tro eat them. Oddly children seem to enjoy such brutal contractions with the cold indifference of nature. It being outside also helps to disperse their shrieking.
- 35The Met ShopTe AroA great distraction for the kiddie-winkles if you can afford it, because let me tell you you’re not getting out of that place without buying them some glowly swizzle stick. Also I find the stuff Moa deeply unsettling but that’s probs just me.
- 46The Dowse Art MuseumLower Hutt CentralIf the drive/bus/train out there doesn’t drain all their surplus of manic, energy, the scale of the place and almost daunting surfeit of beautiful cultural artefacts. According to my memory basically half of my childhood took place at the Dowse so it clearly worked for my parents. Though that may say more about it than about how effective the Dowse is as a kiddy calming place.

Do do do do do do do Nature Enter Meeeeeee
- 110The premier place for nature-interac- y perambulation in this city. Work out your legs with a walk that also expands your heart with the beauty of nature.
- 221Wellington ZooNewtownDude, do you have any idea the amount of things that seem perfectly evolved to kill us? There’s loads of them at the Zoo.
- 320Wellington Botanic GardensKelburnFlowers, trees, hills! Oscar Wilde said that Americans were angry because their buildings are so ugly. We make the world ugly by implanting our harsh geometries in the unbeatable, innate beauty of nature. We should treasure it! Not destroy it!
- 46Central ParkMount CookThere is a flying fox, your argument is invalid.

Fush 'nd Chups in Wullingtin
- 16Te Aro Fish Supplies Ltd.Aro ValleyThey used to be very great, recently age has brought them down to just very good. To eat a Te Aro city is to fall irrevocably in love with this city.
- 225Mt Vic ChipperyMount VictoriaFancy FnC has taken quite a while to make its way to this city so we’re lucky that it’s done it finally with so much style. It may be a bit smug but with noms this good, you’d be a bit smug too.
- 35Starfish Fish & ChipsThorndonPokey but full of character. Feels like the kind of place that the framing story of a Polish family epic film would be set.
- 46Fish FinsNewtownNot as great as the typography on their sign, but few things are. Maybe I only like this place because a bunch of good stuff has happened to me while eating food from there but, really, isn’t that enough reason to like something?
