Theatre is an elegant reworking of K Rd's super-slim and iconic Norman Ng building, formerly housing Norman's fruit store and then Brazil cafe and latterly Handmade Burgers. Don't be deceived by the narrowness of the space (although it is one of the narrowest buildings in the Southern hemisphere) as the sweeping staircase leads to a great mezzani. Try a scrumptious meal from Theatre's menu or something tasty and ready to go from the cabinet.

Theatre's a really unique cafe, the staff are very friendly and the food is really something special. The Eggs Benedict is just to die for, and the hot chocolates are the best I've ever tasted. The prices are cheaper than your average in the area, and every penny is worth it. Not only is it amazing by regular cafe standards, the place is gorgeous as it used to be the K Road entrance to the Mercury Theatre. The arching ceiling is stunning and the authentic feel to the place really makes any visit to this a highlight in my day. Also, they just hired a cute new English guy, well worth going along and checking him out ;)
I have been meaning to go and check out theater cafe for a while now, after seeing their great review in the Canvas a year or two ago. I walked in and instantly loved the vibe and the atmosphere. With a good selection of cabinet food, they also offer a cheaper breakfast menu which is always appealing. I ordered a salad with an a egg and spinach cake, i would really recommend the egg and spinach cake. The salad was a bit disappointing as the flavours didn't compliment each other as well as it should have and the coffee on several occasions hasn't been as nice as I would have suspected.
When I first walked into Theatre, my first reaction was one of amazement. I remember it being Brazil, then Handmade Burger's ill fated foray, so what the new owners have done is simply brilliant. Marble walls, a long arched entrance and I hear a rumor the old cool room which runs under K Road has been reopened. Unfortunately I found the service and food didnt quite meet up to the opulence of the decor. I think I waited half an hour to get a fresh orange juice, despite the fact there were more staff then customers. My breakfast was fine, but nothing to write home about. However, the addition of this great space to K Road makes up for the lacklustre dining experience, hopefully they can sort it out soon.
So good to see this idiosyncratic space restored in good taste, and even better to learn the menu and coffee at Theatre were so good. I had the Big Greek Breakfast, which is delicious in the end - but, because it arrives on a hot plate, you kinda have to wait a while for the food to cool down enough to eat! Next time I'll allow an extra coffee in that gap. My friend had a delicious lamb-filled baguette, which was the highlight - succulent meat, the right amount of sauce and salad and on nice crusty bread. The coffee was strong and faultless when we went.
After several visits, the food just gets better! A recent meal of vegetarian bubble and squeak - fritters of potato and swede with homemade picalilli and crispy kale accompanied by a fried egg on toasted french bread was just AMAZING! My partner had butterbean and tomato spiced dish served with poached egg and toasted french bread. Superb flavours! Very friendly service as well - highly recommended!
