This waterfall is one of the country's tallest and most accessible with water cascading down 96m. Located in the extremely picturesque Mt Aspiring National Park, the falls - known as a horsetail waterfall - are a must-see for both locals and tourists and can be accessed via the easy 10-minute return Thunder Creek Falls Walk, which leads to the waterfall's viewing platform. The track is suitable for people of all abilities.

Thunder Creek Falls is roughly an 1-1.5 hours drive away from Wanaka. If you drive from Wanaka, take SH-6 (Haast Highway) and stay on it for 92km until you see a big sign “Thunder Creek Falls” and a relatively big carpark. There are no facilities there.

A favourite place of mine for swimming. You can get to Thunder Creek Falls by foot and is well worth the very easy 10 minute return journey just to take a dip on a hot summer's day!

Love this space and leave no trace because honestly this is one of the coolest waterfalls in New Zealand that I've ever discovered. It's a huge, cascading, frothy, foamy natural wonder and just 10 minutes walk from the car. Go swimming if you dare but in this part of the country, the rivers are freezing. Always a good way to wake up!
