A rough but beautiful wilderness close to the heart of Tauranga, Waikareao Estuary is the ideal spot for an urban getaway. Featuring a network of tracks and easy bush walks all ages can enjoy the area with dogs allowed as well.

A nine-km loop, with lots of access points and parking means the walk can be as long or as short as you wish. The easy track covers grassland, boardwalks through wetlands and regenerating bush and on the estuary side there’s no danger of traffic. It’s suitable for an easy relaxed stroll and bikeable so you can keep up with energetic dogs. The joy of this park is its variety, safe shallow swimming spots and lots of canine friends.

    Just outside of the city, is a 9km loop track that takes you around the outside of the estuary. A mix of boardwalk, bush and gravel track its great to do on either a bike or by foot.
