On a sunny Sunday afternoon, Wellington waterfront is packed with dog walkers, many of whom are happy to accommodate requests for pats (but do remember to ask before patting strangers’ pets!). Bernie the Bernese mountain dog, often found outside Freyberg Pool on Oriental Bay, has even become a bit of a local celebrity.

For the first time, Wellington is holding its very own Oktoberfest on the waterfront: think Toast Martinborough but in town, with beer, and much cheaper! An unmissable chance to mix Kiwi brews and legit German beer (and to dress up like a beer wench!)

The Wellington Waterfront is at its best when drenched in warming sunshine. On a sunny day its the perfect place to go for a stroll and a an ice cream, or take a seat on one of the benches and soak up some of that Vitamin D.

Sometimes you need a good talking to and sometimes the person that needs to do that talking is, well, yourself. It doesn’t have to be out loud, of course, that would be crazy. But once in a while everyone needs a little time out, take a bit of a walk and sort things out. The Waterfront is the best place, I’ve found, to just have a dawdle and solve your life woes in your head. On a nice day the gentle woosh and wash of the sea has meditative effects and helps you slowly pick apart the knots of the your worries. I do it about once a week, but that probably says a lot more about me than about what healthy mental health practice is.
