Known as Otuihau to local Maori, the dramatic Whangarei Falls are situated in the Whangarei Scenic Reserve. The picturesque spot where the Hātea River falls 26.3 meters over basalt cliffs has been a popular location for picnics since the 1890s.

A fabulous walking track takes you around the falls where you can view them in all their glory from a series of spectacular viewing points. Surrounded by native trees and wildlife, there is also a longer walkway to the Whangarei Town Basin.

Picnic tables and toilets are located close to the carpark, with a holiday park and backpackers nearby.

The beautiful waterfall located on the outskirts of Tikipunga has it all. A beautiful view from the lookout at the top reveals a spectacular swimming hole down the bottom which seems so much higher than 26 meters. I’ve even seen people jumping in from the top! If jumping from tremendous heights isn’t your cup of tea there are two equally wonderful bush tracks that lead to the bottom. I love picnics at the bottom on a warm summers day - PERFECT!

Whangarei Falls is an awesome place to go for a dip on a hot summers day. It’s a small bush walk to the actual swimming hole at the bottom. Now some people have been known to take a short cut via leaping from the top! I didn’t have the nerve to, but maybe you do! I loved the beautiful stream leading to the waterfall at the top, which is such a pleasure during a hot day.

What better way to show your never-ending cascading love than take your darling for a picnic at the Whangarei Falls. The waterfalls which are part of the Hatea River are picture perfect and stream down like a curtain. They're only a 10 minute drive from the city centre and are well equipped with bathrooms and a gorgeous lush picnic are. There's a two minute walking track that goes to the falls lookout, then if you go a tiny bit further you'll find yourself at the base of the waterfall. The perfect wee adventure to share with you lucky partner!
