Where to shop for Spring
- 14Recycle Boutique HamiltonHamilton EastLike op-shopping, but with less trawling. Everything these guys sell is deemed "fashionable" and they have pretty strict guidelines on quality and condition. Great if you’re searching for a new look for Spring, especially if vintage or retro is your style. Not as cheap as an op-shop, but there are still bargains up for grabs. Find them: 322 Grey Street.
- 23Salvation Army Family StoreHamilton CentralIf you’ve read my lists before, you’ll know I love op-shopping. They’re a great place to pick up Spring additions for your wardrobe, without having to budget or save! Sallies in Hamilton has a decent selection of clothes and lots of shoes. Tip: Don’t be disheartened if you don’t find anything on your first visit- they often have new stock.
- 31Bunnings Warehouse HamiltonTe RapaI’ve been popping to Bunnings everytime I’m in Hamilton. With the warmer weather coming, I’ve started to get excited about planting my gardens with heaps of veggies and colourful flowers, and have begun buying, seedlings, seeds and pots in anticipation. The staff are always so helpful and seem genuinely happy- which is probably why I go back so often!
- 42Kimberleys HamiltonHamilton CentralHead to Kimberleys at The Base if you love your labels and are looking for something fresh this Spring. A number of brands conveniently in one place with international fashions and fabrics. I love the range of jewellery these guys have, lots of feathers and rocks. Tip: Check out their website for new arrivals.

A day out in Cambridge
- 11Cambridge Hospice ShopCambridgeCambridge is op-shop rich! With many stores scattered around town, you can easily spend the morning browsing for bargains. Who wants to pay hundreds of dollars for things you can find for 5? Plus, not only are you saving money, but the money is going to a good cause AND buying second hand is recycling, so you’re also helping the planet. If you’re not an op-shopper, become one now! You can find anything. Start at the Hospice Shop, 2 Anzac Street.
- 22I love wandering around a town to get an impression of the people, to get the feel of the place. I find one of the best ways to compliment these wanderings is by seeking out local art. The Heritage Gallery is a wonderful spot, overflowing with artworks. If you’re lucky you’ll find a piece that calls out to you. If not, you’ll still see a reflection of the area in a variety of inspiring forms.
- 32Frans CafeCambridgeA gorgeous little cafe with mouthwatering sweets and amazing sandwiches. Vegan and vegetarian, this spot suits all with unusual options too. Have a coffee and a beautiful piece of cake to break up the day. Everything here has a very homemade, loved feel, which goes well with Fran’s very high quality and obvious skill.
- 45Lake KarapiroHamilton EastEnjoy an afternoon at Lake Kapirio, a stunning lake domain just out of Cambridge. I find that fresh water swimming can be hugely invigorating, but if that doesn’t tickle your fancy there’s a whole heap of alternative activities available too, such as kayaking or swinging through the high ropes course. Kids and teenagers love this spot - it's a great place to burn off some energy. Plus there's lots of places for family picnics and also secret pockets of tranquility to nestle down quietly with a book.
- 51Tivoli CinemaCambridgeI’m a big film fan and seeing them on the big screen is my absolute favourite way to enjoy a new picture. Tivoli is a new independent cinema, which means it has a varied programme, with many foreign and art house films, unlike the bigger branded theatres. Boasting a brand new interior, comfortable sofas and a boutique menu of wine and cheeses, it makes for the perfect end to a day in Cambridge.

What to do in Raglan
- 15Raglan Roast Volcom LaneRaglanStart the day like a local- at Raglan Roast. Pick up one of their deep flavoured brews (cheaper than anywhere I know) to enjoy outside in the sunny lane or in the amazing smelling cafe/roasterie. Eavesdrop or ask for the surf report, and head out to the ocean, buzzing.
- 21Kanuka DesignRaglanThere are lots of lovely little shops in Raglan- Kanuka is one of my favourites. They have a beautiful selection of New Zealand made jewellery, ever-changing wall artworks and a unique collection of books. Great for gifts, treats, trinkets, inspiration and window shopping. Find them on Volcom Lane.
- 31If you’ve never been surfing, book yourself a lesson with the guys at Raglan Surfing School. Surfing is awesome- you’ll know after your first go if you’ve got the bug! And having a lesson is a great introduction to the sport and ocean safety. Plus, when you first stand up, it makes a difference having someone to ‘whoop’ with! If you’re an experienced surfer, head to Manu Bay and beyond for world class waves.
- 43Valentes Outwest CantinaRaglanGo to Valente’s for one of their delicious pizzas. This is probably the most consistent venue for live music, so hopefully you’ll get to see a local legend or a visiting band. It feels pretty groovy here, there’s a bit of a wild west theme, which I suppose could be inspired by the wild west coast and a southwest/mexican style menu. Family friendly.
- 51Raglan Boat ChartersRaglanFinish the day with a sunset cruise aboard the Wahine Moa. There’s nothing quite like watching the daylight fade from the water. And to top it off, you can enjoy a glass of New Zealand wine or beer from their licensed bar. Awesome experience and a warm and welcoming crew.
