Yum cha is a Chinese morning or afternoon tea which involves drinking tea and eating bite-sized dim sum dishes, like dumplings, steamed buns and more adventurous Chinese fare. If you’re afraid of giving this fast paced, authentic dining experience a go, we’ve rounded up 5 yum cha restaurants that will take good care of you.
Dragons is located in the heart of Courtenay Place and Tory Street, it is the ideal restaurant to pop into before a night out on the Town! Dragons is good for all group sizes, and with it's fully stocked bar and very special wine list, or BYO, its sure to keep your lady happy, while the continual supply of food will keep your mates happy. The restaurant is very large, and furnished with Chinese decorations throughout. The staff are very friendly and courteous and make sure your tea is always adequately topped up or just pay attention the constantly rolling around trolley full of beer! (Unless of course you bought your own wine). The portion sizes are adequate, hot and fresh. The pricing is good too, it's definitely value for money going to Dragons - I would definitely go again! Must try Mango Pudding too, have heard only amazing things!
Majestic Cuisine reviewed by Ella I.
When I went to Wellington, my local friends told me the best place for a leisurely dim sum / yum char lunch was Majestic Cuisine. Surely enough, this spot is an excellent place to eat your fill of steamed pork buns, crispy roast duck and some more unusual options like mango pudding and durian pastry - yummers! Majestic Cuisine is open for lunch from 11am to 3pm and for dinner from 5pm until late. Oh and it's BYO which makes it super appealing for us broke young people!
Grand Century reviewed by Beth B.
Yum cha is the perfect weekend meal, you don't have to decide what to order, you just point and nod. All their dumplings are parceled perfection so you can chow on many wonderful dumpling flavours and some succulent pork belly for good measure! To finish, Grand Century have the best coconut buns in Wellington.
Big Thumb Restaurant reviewed by Anna m.
Very well known around town! This place has a great rep for delivering real, simple, delicious Chinese food. Yum Char from 11am-2.30pm. Thumbs up!
Regal Chinese Restaurant reviewed by Greg K.
I've been a long-time fan of Regal's yum cha. It is probably not only the most affordable place to have yum cha in the city, but also perhaps the best in terms of both range and quality. You can take for granted that the classics are quality - pork buns, shrimp dumplings, roast duck. But save some space for those coconut buns and egg custard tarts. Be sure to book in advance!
