For first time business owner Lee of Fuwa Cafe, building a successful cafe from the ground up has taken a lot of creativity, hard work - and good luck. Fuwa, literally "good-luck dolls", were the mascots of the 2008 Beijing Olympics and carry connotations of friendship and peace. Fuwa lives up to its warm name, offering delicious Asian and European foods and friendly service. Lee says there is one more reason their cafe is called Fuwa, “We have had our first baby last year, and another translation for fuwa is lucky child. We want our baby to be lucky.”

Fuwa Cafe isn't much to look at, nor does it offer much in terms of ambiance - wait! This is a positive review! As it's the closest cafe to my work, I spend a decent amount of time and money here, and the quality of the coffee and food is consistent, and the service, excellent, making Fuwa Cafe a great choice if you're in the area (and, let's be honest, pickings are slim in the region of The Terrace) and looking for a no-frills lunch destination or a quiet office away from the office. Try in the foyer of Radio New Zealand House after and you can often score cheese scones and leftover cabinet food for $2 or $4.
