I walked into this cafe and was dazzled by it’s simplicity. It’s hard to describe it’s beauty….seriously! As you enter the cafe your confronted with a large wooden table that fills the space and this is the seating for the cafe…that’s it minus a few tables outside. There are beautiful white shelves adorned with delicious goodies. Then you reach the counter and your breath is taken away as you are transported into food heaven. Each bakery item is a work of art! The baci cake is divine and went so well with my perfectly brewed long black. This place is seriously good and probably one of Aucklands best kept secrets….I’m in love! And the best part about this successful cafe is the story behind it. Apparently it was started by a fellow mumpreneur who’s teenage daughter would help out even during her lunch break from school!
Little and Friday has rapidly become something of an Auckland institution – a little café in suburban Belmont, far from the beaten path but attracting a steady stream of visitors from all over Auckland. The secret is in the simplicity. There’s no menu, just counter food – a small but delightful array of sweets and savouries made on the premises, served in a stylish yet homely environment. One big table, lots of magazines, individually-wrapped sticks of butter in greaseproof paper, water in old milk-bottles … you get the picture. Like the similar (but not quite as good) Il Forno and Agnes Curran in Ponsonby, the lack of choice and very public/simple eating environment actually works to an advantage, creating a warm, friendly communal eating environment. What makes Little and Friday so great, though, is the quality of the food. Every item of food looks and (based on what I’ve tried) tastes amazing. High quality ingredients and attention to detail make for a fantastic dining experience.
Unfortunately we were too late to have our coffee and pastry in the shop, but we got some pastry to go and it was all very yummy. I can’t wait to go back and have some in the cafe with a coffee. I’m sorry but I just have to cut it down to 2.5 stars due to the opening hours. 3pm even on the weekend is very poor. I know it’s not just me who likes to go to a cafe between 3-6pm. Otherwise, it would certainly be 4 stars!
Even with the power out and no coffee this place is amazing in fact having no coffee makes it better! I get to enjoy my food and newspaper in peace I’ve been forced to drink awesome apple and orange juice instead of coffee and my tart which I usually get heated tastes just as good! Good work on the staff havin to struggle without eftpos and shame on aucklanders who can’t handle!
Love going to Little & Friday, such a nice and friendly cafe. Always super busy so sometimes you have to wait for a table. The food and coffee is worth it though, I definitely recommend trying any of the pies and the chocolate cake with raspberry syrup... so good! Also they have catered at a couple of my friends functions and they are just amazing.
Super cute wee cafe. Took the ferry over to meet some girlfriends, they shared a raspberry friand (or something similar!), I had the quiche lorraine. AMAZING!!! All food was much enjoyed, as were the delicious coffees. Lovely atmosphere with the big table, cute cutlery and the water with cinnamon and mint being a nice touch.
