While I don't tend too hit the beach that often in Wellington when I do, Lyall Bay is my favourite spot! It is such a prefect in between of the city and the beach with the planes coming over head while you enjoy the waves. A quick drive out of the city will bring you to a quiet haven for the afternoon and thats what I love about this beach. The beaches in Wellington are certainly underrated!

Lyall bay beach allows dogs roam free, without the annoying constraint of a leash. Your pooch can partake in some doggy play time, whilst you enjoy a romantic evening seaside stroll. Lyall bay is also one of Wellington’s few surf spots, if thats your thing.

Just a bit out of the centre of Wellington, Lyall Bay beach lies; just a short drive will take you here, one of the best places to go for those in search of a close beach with decent waves for surfers. Close to a lot of amenities, which is a good thing for those that like being able to make a full day at the beach. One of the better spots in Wellington!

Close on to town, but a boat may be necessary to get out into the ocean with the best catch rather than surfcast from the beach. It appears to be doing well for those in the know and as it’s close to town it could be a good excursion with the family. Be wary of all the others around and you could be in for a good day!

Love this beach - great cafe spots nearby and good for a nice walk, especially if you have a dog.

While I'm a bit of a wuss when it comes to swimming in the sea, it doesn't stop me from visiting the beach in Lyall Bay when the suns out. After slip, slop, slapping, I'm either out getting dragged along the beach with the dog down by the airport end. Or sipping on some coffee at Maranui cafe at the other end. The beach is always packed with people watching the brave swimmers and surfers. while cyclists and walkers putter along the esplanade.
