Recently dined here for a friend's birthday and it hasn't changed since I was at high school (Auckland Girls' Grammar School just around the corner). The restaurant is perfect for large groups as you can all order small dishes to share around the table. The staff are friendly and helpful if you're not familiar with the Japanese cuisine. Their grilled eggplant with cheese is so delicious and the salmon wing is divine! Plenty of parking too which is great for the area (Ponsonby Rd just around the corner can be quite difficult to find a park).
Big call I know but I have been to Nishiki's so many times and the food is always delicious! Love going there and trying new things and the staffs suggestions are always extremely helpful. It definitely pays to book as they are pretty much full most nights of the weeks. See you Friday night Nishiki's!
Nishiki serves a huge array of small traditional and less than traditional Japanese dishes - sushi, donburi, yaki soba, agedashi tofu, grilled eggplant with cheese (!) and more - brilliant for sharing lots of dishes with a large group. Plus it's BYO, making it one of the best group dinner options around.
I recently took a cooking class at Sachie's Kitchen in Parnell, and Sachie herself said she rates Nishiki as one of Auckland's top Japanese restaurants. But then I already knew that! I live a two-minute walk from the restaurant, so have been going semi-regularly since moving into the neighbourhood. I feel very lucky to have such a great place so close. I have been slowly working my way through the restaurant and apart from the very odd not-quite-there choice, I am yet to come across any total misses - this menu is full of hits. Regular faves are the beef and salmon tataki dishes, and the agedashi tofu has just the right amount of savoury umami-goodness. Great for a group - I had a group of 20 for my birthday there last year - but equally nice as a spot for a romantic twosome. BYO is a bonus!
Nishiki is my favourite resturant in auckland! It has the most amazing atmosphere, the staff are 100% all the time and they give you a big loud japanese welcome and farewell everytime you come or go. The food is delcious and everyone loves a byo! I love the buz, i love the food and i love the people!
